Hubert Hermans considers the self as multivoiced and dialogical. Is inspired by James's psychology of the self and the Russian literary scholar Mikhail Bakhtin who introduced the concept "polyphonic novel" after an analysis of the works of Dostoyevsky. The theory Acknowledges not only the role of human interchange but also the impact of power. The "self" may consist of multiple "selves" any of which may interact with each other in a dialogical fashion. The "self" is presented as a non-unitary embodiment that transcends the limits of individualism and rationalism. Modern society is thus a multiplicity of collective voices.
